String of Bananas
Curio radicans
A delightful succulent characterized by its long, cascading stems adorned with small, emerald-green leaves that remarkably resemble miniature bananas. Native to South Africa, this trailing plant is a favorite for hanging baskets, creating a lush, curtain-like effect as it matures. It is closely related to the String of Pearls but is generally considered hardier and faster-growing.

Care Guide
Light Requirements
String of Bananas thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. It can handle several hours of direct morning sun, but intense afternoon rays may scorch the 'bananas.' A south or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering
Use the 'soak and dry' method. Allow the potting medium to dry out completely between waterings. When you water, do so thoroughly until it drains out the bottom, then discard excess water. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, leading to root rot.
Soil and Potting
A well-draining cactus or succulent mix is essential. You can enhance drainage by adding perlite or pumice to a standard potting soil. Choose a pot with ample drainage holes.
Seasonal Tips
- Spring/Summer: This is the active growth period. Ensure consistent light and regular (but sparse) watering.
- Winter: Growth slows significantly. Reduce watering frequency and keep the plant away from cold drafts or heating vents.
Common Issues
- Mushy, yellowing leaves: This is a sign of overwatering. Stop watering immediately and check the roots for rot.
- Shriveled leaves: While this can mean the plant is thirsty, it can also happen if the roots have died from rot and can no longer absorb water. Check soil moisture before adding more.
