The Practical Greenhouse

Real advice for real homes, from 40 years of dirty hands.

Meet Silas

I'm not a corporate botanist, and I don't run a clinical laboratory. I'm the neighbor who has a 20-year-old Monstera climbing the hallway walls and knows exactly why your Calathea is throwing a tantrum.

Over the last forty years, I've killed my fair share of plants. But that's exactly how you learn. You learn that gardening isn't about achieving some magazine-cover perfection; it's about observation, adjustment, and building a system that works for *your* specific home.

Ferns & Focus was born out of a desire to cut through the noise. There is a lot of complicated, intimidating advice out there. My goal is to break it down into the simple mechanics of care—drainage, light angles, soil density—so you can stop worrying and start growing.

"Success is just a series of small, correct moves."

The Core Philosophy

When people ask me for the "secret" to keeping plants alive, I tell them there isn't one. Plants are simple mechanical systems. If you understand how roots use air and how leaves use light, you can fix almost anything.

  • Look at the leaves: They will always show you the problem before it's too late.
  • Efficiency over perfection: Don't fuss over a single yellow leaf. Focus on the overall health and growth of the plant.
  • Respect the roots: The most common mistake is loving a plant to death with a watering can. Roots need to breathe just as much as they need to drink.
