Hoya Kerrii
Hoya kerrii
The Hoya kerrii, commonly known as the Sweetheart Plant or Valentine Hoya, is a tropical climbing vine famous for its thick, heart-shaped leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, it is a slow-growing epiphyte that produces stunning, waxy, star-shaped flowers in clusters. It is frequently sold as a single rooted leaf in a small pot, making it a popular gift for special occasions, though it requires a stem node to eventually grow into a full vining plant.

Care Guide
Light and Placement
Hoya kerrii thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate a few hours of direct morning sun, harsh afternoon rays can cause the leaves to turn yellow or burn. A south or west-facing window with a sheer curtain is an ideal location.
Watering and Soil
This plant is succulent-like and stores water in its thick leaves. Allow the potting medium to dry out completely between waterings. Use a very chunky, well-draining potting mix; a combination of orchid bark, perlite, and cactus soil is highly recommended. In winter, reduce watering frequency significantly as the plant's metabolism slows.
Temperature and Humidity
Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C–27°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be kept away from cold drafts or air conditioning vents. While it adapts to standard household humidity, it will grow more vigorously in humidity levels above 50%.
Long-Term Growth
If you have a single-leaf specimen, be patient. These are often 'zombie leaves' that can live for years without ever growing a vine if a stem node was not included in the cutting. For a vining plant, ensure you purchase a specimen with a visible stem and multiple leaves.
Common Issues
Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Conversely, if the leaves become wrinkled and thin, the plant is likely dehydrated or has suffered root damage from being kept dry for too long.
