False Shamrock

Oxalis regnellii

The Oxalis regnellii, commonly known as the Green Shamrock or False Shamrock, is a delightful and expressive houseplant characterized by its vibrant green, trifoliate leaves that resemble a three-leaf clover. This plant is famous for its nyctinastic movements, where the leaves fold inward at night and open wide during the day to catch the sunlight. It produces clusters of delicate, star-shaped white flowers that contrast beautifully against its lush greenery.

Pet Warning

Contains oxalic acid, which is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. If ingested, it can cause excessive salivation, vomiting, and in large quantities, kidney distress.

Care Guide

Light

Place your Oxalis in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. A window facing East or West is ideal. Too little light can cause the plant to become leggy and lose its compact, bushy appearance.

Watering

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Oxalis prefers consistent moisture but is prone to bulb rot if the soil remains waterlogged. Ensure your pot has excellent drainage.

Managing Dormancy

Oxalis plants naturally enter a dormant phase once or twice a year. If the leaves start to turn yellow and die back despite proper care, do not panic. Stop watering and move the plant to a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks. Once new shoots appear, bring it back to the light and resume regular watering.

Temperature

This plant thrives in cooler indoor temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C - 24°C). Temperatures above 80°F may cause the plant to wilt or enter dormancy prematurely.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing Leaves: Usually indicates overwatering or the beginning of a dormancy cycle.
  • Legginess: A sign that the plant is reaching for more light; move it to a brighter location.
