Desert Rose

Adenium obesum

The Desert Rose is a striking succulent shrub characterized by its thick, bulbous trunk known as a caudex and its brilliant, trumpet-shaped flowers. It originates from the arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, naturally resembling a miniature tree or bonsai. Its unique appearance and vibrant blooms make it a highly sought-after specimen for sunny windowsills and patios.

Pet Warning

The entire plant is highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It contains cardiac glycosides which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and heart rhythm issues. The milky sap can also cause skin irritation.

Care Guide

Light Needs: Desert Rose thrives in full sun. Place it in a location where it receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. ### Watering: Follow a 'soak and dry' routine. Water the plant until it drains out the bottom, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Significant reduction in water is necessary during the winter dormancy. ### Temperature: Maintain temperatures above 50°F (10°C). This plant is extremely sensitive to frost. ### Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage more blooms. Always wear gloves as the sap is toxic. ### Common Problems: Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot. Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites or mealybugs.
