Begonia rex-cultorum
Fancy-leaf begonias grown for patterned foliage more than flowers. Large asymmetrical leaves come in silver, pink, purple, and deep green with soft stems and a metallic sheen. They need bright filtered light, even moisture, and high humidity.

Pet Warning
Toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Contains soluble calcium oxalates which cause oral irritation, intense burning of the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The rhizomes contain the highest concentration of toxins.
Care Notes
Light
Give bright, filtered light. A north or east window works well. Direct sun scorches the leaves.
Water
Keep the mix evenly moist, never soggy. Water when the top inch feels dry. Avoid wetting the leaves so fungal spots stay away. Use a pot with drainage holes.
Soil
Use a light peat-based or coco-coir mix with perlite or vermiculite. It should drain quickly while still holding some moisture.
Humidity & Temperature
Keep humidity at 50% or higher with a pebble tray or room humidifier. Skip misting, which can encourage powdery mildew. In winter, growth may slow; water less and expect a quieter plant.
Common Issues
Watch for mealybugs and root rot. Good air circulation around the foliage helps. Yellow leaves often mean the mix stayed wet too long.
