Ponytail Palm

Beaucarnea recurvata

Not a true palm, but an Agave-family succulent with a swollen base and long, arching leaves. The caudex stores water, so it handles dry soil better than most houseplants. Slow-growing and forgiving if you avoid soggy roots.

Care Notes

Light

Give it bright light, ideally full sun or a very bright window. In deep shade, growth stalls and leaves look dull. A sunny sill helps this plant thrive.

Water

Water sparingly. Let the top 75–100% of the mix dry before soaking again. In winter, you may only need water every 4–6 weeks. Always use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer.

Soil

Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Ponytail palms prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot only every 2–3 years into a slightly larger planter.

Humidity & Temperature

Low humidity is fine. Keep temperatures around 60–85°F and away from cold drafts and blasting AC vents. This plant dislikes sudden cold.

Common Issues

Brown tips are common and can be trimmed with clean scissors. They often come from over-fertilizing or very dry indoor air. Mushy bases usually mean overwatering and root rot. Wipe dust off leaves with a damp cloth so they can breathe.
