Pet Friendly

This plant is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, the sap may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning.

Care Notes

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps the purple metallic look. Lower light fades the color toward green. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.

Water

Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top half-inch to inch feels dry. Lukewarm water is gentler on the roots. Use a pot with drainage holes. The plant wilts visibly when thirsty.

Soil

Choose a rich, peat-heavy mix that still drains well so moisture stays available without sitting stagnant.

Humidity and Temperature

Humidity above 50% prevents crispy edges. Use a humidifier or pebble tray. Prefer 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C), and protect from cold below 60°F. Pinch stem tips for a fuller plant. Many growers refresh the look every few years from stem cuttings. In winter, water less and pause fertilizer while keeping humidity up.

Common Issues

Faded purple usually means more bright, indirect light is needed. Crispy edges point to dry air. Soft yellow leaves often mean overwatering.
