Monarch Fern

Phymatosorus scolopendria

Monarch Fern, also called Wart Fern, is a hardy creeping fern with glossy, leathery, deeply lobed fronds that rise from thick furry rhizomes. Raised orange-brown spore clusters on the undersides create a dimpled look on top. Crushed foliage has a mild musk-like scent.

Pet Friendly

Phymatosorus scolopendria is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet owners.

Care Notes

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Direct afternoon sun can scorch the leathery fronds. Medium light is tolerated, though growth slows.

Water

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep moisture steady without letting rhizomes sit in stagnant water. Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Soil

Choose a loose, airy organic mix such as peat moss, perlite, and a little orchid bark. Repot about every 2 years, or when creeping rhizomes crowd the pot rim.

Humidity and Temperature

Humidity of 50% or higher helps this tropical fern. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or misting. Keep temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents.

Common Issues

Brown leaf tips usually mean low humidity or underwatering. Yellowing fronds often point to overwatering.
