Pet Friendly

The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA, though its milky sap can be a mild irritant to the skin or if ingested in large quantities.

Care Notes

Light

Place your Hoya near an east or west window for bright, indirect light. In a south window, use a sheer curtain. Stronger light often brings out more silver splash and helps encourage blooms.

Water

Let the mix dry completely before watering. These thick leaves store moisture, so wet soil leads to root rot. Soak thoroughly, then let water exit the drainage holes.

Soil

Use a chunky epiphyte mix of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil or coco coir. Good airflow around the roots matters as much as the watering schedule.

Humidity and Temperature

Keep temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from cold drafts. Humidity around 50% or higher is helpful, but average homes usually work.

Common Issues

Watch leaf joints for mealybugs. Do not prune the peduncles after flowers drop; new blooms return on the same spurs. Dust the large leaves with a damp cloth so they can make the most of available light.
