Hoya australis

Hoya australis, also called Waxvine or Honey Plant, is a sturdy climbing vine with thick, glossy deep-green leaves. It can produce clusters of star-shaped, porcelain-white flowers with crimson centers and a spicy-sweet scent, especially in the evening. It grows faster than many Hoyas and works well on an indoor trellis or in a hanging basket.

Hoya australis is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. However, the milky sap may cause mild skin irritation for humans with latex sensitivities.

Care Notes

Light

Give your Hoya australis bright, indirect light. Filtered sun for much of the day helps it bloom. Gentle morning sun is usually fine; hot afternoon sun can scorch the thick leaves.

Water

Let the top half to three-quarters of the mix dry before you water thoroughly. Soak the planter, then let every bit of excess drain away. This plant handles short dry spells better than soggy roots.

Soil

Use a chunky, airy mix (orchid bark, perlite, and a bit of potting soil or coco coir). Hoyas like being a little root-bound, so skip frequent repotting. Always choose a pot with drainage holes.

Humidity and Temperature

Aim for 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Average home humidity works; growth often picks up above 50%. Keep the plant clear of cold drafts and heating vents.

Common Issues

Yellow, soft leaves usually mean overwatering or poor drainage. Wrinkled leaves point to underwatering. Leave the peduncles in place after blooms fade so the plant can flower from the same stalks again.
