Gasteria

Gasteria spp.

Gasteria is a South African succulent group with thick tongue-shaped leaves that may be mottled, warted, or banded. Flowers are belly-shaped, which is where the name comes from. These slow growers handle lower light better than many sun-hungry succulents.

Light

Place in bright, indirect light. Gasteria can handle lower light than many succulents, but deep shade may stretch or dull the leaves. Avoid hot afternoon sun that scorches foliage.

Water

Use soak-and-dry watering. Wait until the soil is fully dry, then water deeply. In winter, water only every few weeks. Keep water off the leaves where it can pool.

Soil

Use a gritty cactus mix in a planter with drainage holes. Root rot from wet soil is the most common failure point.

Humidity & Temperature

Low humidity is fine. A cooler winter rest around 50-60°F (10-15°C) can encourage spring blooms. Protect from frost.

Common Issues

Soft yellow leaves usually mean overwatering. Red or brown leaves can mean too much direct sun. Check leaf crevices for mealybugs.
