Angel Wing Begonia
Begonia x corallina
The Angel Wing Begonia is a striking cane-type begonia grown for its spectacular foliage and pendulous flower clusters. Its name derives from the unique shape of its elongated leaves, which often feature shimmering silver spots or metallic sheens on the top and deep burgundy or red undersides. Give it bright, indirect light, moderate humidity, and a planter that lets excess water drain freely.

Pet Warning
Toxic to cats and dogs. Contains calcium oxalate crystals which cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The tubers/roots are the most toxic part.
Care Notes
Light
Place your angel wing begonia in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. East or west-facing windows are ideal. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. They prefer consistent moisture but are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Use a planter with drainage holes.
Humidity and Temperature
While they tolerate average home humidity, they thrive in 40-60% humidity. Use a pebble tray or humidifier if the air is very dry to prevent crispy leaf edges.
Maintenance
Prune regularly to maintain a bushy shape and prevent the plant from becoming too leggy. Pinch back young stems to encourage branching and more flower production.
Seasonal Care
Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Growth slows significantly in winter, so reduce watering frequency and stop fertilizing if growth stalls.
Soil and Planter
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite or vermiculite for aeration. Choose a planter with drainage holes so excess water can escape.
Common Issues
Yellowing often starts when the potting mix stays wet for too long. Check the soil and drainage holes before adding more water.
